If your tub or bathroom sink is backing up, check for a hair clog before you call us.
I can tell you from experience that homeowners hate it when we charge them for a fix that requires nothing more than pulling out a nasty clump of hair. And we hate having to do it, but once a crew has been dispatched, we have to charge for the plumber’s time and travel.
Removing hair clogs can be done in a few simple steps.

Step 1: Gather Your Tools
- Rubber glove
- Flashlight
- Zip strip, drain snake or wire hanger
- Pair of pliers
Step 2: Remove the Drain Cover
- Remove the drain cover from your bathtub. You might need a screwdriver.
- The overflow cover may be the best access.
- I suggest wearing gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges.
Step 3: Pull Out the Clog
- Insert the zip strip, snake or hanger into the drain and push it down until you feel resistance.
- Twist and push to break up the clog and pull it out.
- Be gentle to avoid damaging the pipe.
- You may have to repeat the process several times to get all the hair or use pliers to get any hair that is hard to reach.
Step 4: Run Hot Water Down the Drain
- Once the drain is clean, flush it with hot water. If you want to deodorize it, you can pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of vinegar. Allow the mixture to sit for about 15 minutes, and then flush it with hot water.
Step 5: Replace the Drain Cover
- Consider using one with a fine mesh screen to catch hair before it causes a clog.
