The most common cause of a dishwasher not draining properly is debris stuck in the internal filter assembly. Most of these screens can be seen when loading and unloading, so if you notice debris building up, it’s time to clean it up.
When is it time to call a plumber for a malfunctioning dishwasher? In Nate’s opinion, only after you’ve called an appliance repair technician and the technician has recommended a plumber. The only parts of a dishwasher connected to the plumbing are the outlet of the drain itself, which is usually under the sink, and the connection to the water, which is also under the sink.
